YARN BRAIDS

How to Yarn Braid
Supplies
  • Acrylic yarn (selected color)  [wool yarn locs hair intentionally]
  • Hair shears (at least 5 inches)
  • Lighter (Bic) or perm-rods (if you opt for the hot-water method)
  • Rat-tail comb (for easy parting)
  • Liquid moisturize (for natural hair and yarn)
  • 5 duck bill clips (to section hair while braiding)
  • Shea butter (to moisturize scalp)
Before braiding/twisting your hair with yarn braids, make sure that your hair has been freshly shampooed, conditioned, and moisturized within the past two days.
  1. Use three strands of yarn for your braid. Interlock one strand over two strands.
  2. Latch yarn onto natural hair at scalp. Criss-cross from left to right.
  3. Separate natural hair into two and interweave natural hair with a single section of yarn.
  4. Continue to braid until you've reached desired length.
  5. Tie the ends using a slip knot. Ravel 2-3 times. Clip loose ends.
  6. Burn ends with a lighter or use perm-rods to curls ends and dip in hot water for 7 minutes.
  7. Moisturize entire scalp with shea butter.
The benefits of yarn braids is that you do not have to cover your hair at night. The older your braids/twists are, the better they look.  Yarn braids have many names- Genie Locs, Rope Twists, Sailor Braids. The options are endless!
